How to Find Your Size Right: Measurement Guide for Occasion Dresses

Finding the right fit starts with accurate measurements. At MWD – My World of Dresses, we want every dress to feel elegant, comfortable, and flattering from the moment you try it on. Use this guide to measure yourself correctly before choosing your size.

For best results, use a soft measuring tape and measure over fitted clothing or undergarments similar to what you plan to wear with your dress.

How to Measure

1. Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your bust while keeping the tape straight across your back.

Make sure the tape is not too tight or too loose. It should sit comfortably around your body without pressing into the skin.

2. Waist

Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, usually above your belly button and below your rib cage.

Stand naturally and avoid holding your breath. Your waist measurement should reflect a comfortable, realistic fit.

3. Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.

Keep your feet together and make sure the measuring tape stays level all the way around your body.

Choosing the Right Size

After taking your bust, waist, and hip measurements, compare them with our size chart.

If your measurements fall between two sizes, we usually recommend choosing the larger size for a more comfortable fit, especially for fitted occasion dresses, evening gowns, prom dresses, and formal styles.

If one area of your body is a different size than the others, choose the size that fits the largest measurement. For example, if your bust matches size S but your hips match size M, size M may offer a better and more comfortable fit.

Common Measuring Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Measuring over bulky clothing

Avoid measuring over sweaters, loose tops, thick jeans, or layered clothing. These can add extra centimeters and lead to choosing a size that is too large.

Measure over fitted clothing or lightweight undergarments for the most accurate result.

Pulling the tape too tight

The measuring tape should sit close to the body, but it should not squeeze you.

If the tape digs into your skin, the measurement may be too small and the dress may feel tight.

Leaving the tape too loose

A loose tape can make your measurements larger than they really are.

Keep the tape snug and level, but comfortable.

Measuring the wrong waist point

Your waist is not always where your jeans sit. For dresses, measure the narrowest part of your torso.

This helps the dress sit more naturally and gives a better fit around the bodice.

Measuring hips too high

For the hip measurement, do not measure at the hip bone only.

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat to make sure the skirt fits comfortably.

Not keeping the tape level

If the tape drops lower in the back or sits unevenly, the measurement may be inaccurate.

Use a mirror or ask someone to help you keep the tape straight all the way around.

Holding your breath or standing unnaturally

Stand relaxed with your shoulders down and your feet together.

Do not hold your breath or pull your stomach in. A beautiful dress should fit your real body comfortably.

Helpful Fit Tips

For fitted gowns, mermaid dresses, satin dresses, and styles with structured bodices, accurate measurements are especially important.

For dresses with less stretch, choosing the larger size is often better if you are between sizes.

For dresses with adjustable details such as lace-up backs, straps, or flexible waistlines, there may be slightly more room for fit adjustment.

If you plan to wear shapewear or a special bra with your dress, take your measurements while wearing them.
